Nonnenberg

single vineyard in the municipality of Rauenthal in the German wine-growing region of Rheingau. The name derives from the former Tiefenthal nunnery, under whose ownership the mountain was cleared. It is recognisable from afar by the late classicist style villa halfway up the hill. The vineyard, which faces south to southwest at an altitude of 110 to 180 metres above sea level with a slope of 30 to 55%, covers almost six hectares of vines. The deep, stony and mostly lime-free soil consists of weathered phyllite slate with quartzites and loess loam. Here, mainly Riesling and some Pinot Noir are grown. The site is solely owned by the Breuer Georg winery. There are other single vineyards called Nonnenberg in the municipalities of Beckstein, Lauda (Baden), Steinbach (Franconia), Strümpfelbach (Württemberg) and Wehlen (Mosel).
