Noto

DOC area for white wines and red wines in the Italian region or from the island of Sicily. It was only created in 2008 and the wines of the formerly independent DOC area Moscato di Noto were transferred. The zone covers the four municipalities of Avola, Noto, Pachino and Rosolini in the province of Siracusa. If the grapes come from classified vineyards, Vigna followed by the name of the vineyard can be indicated on the bottle label.

It is believed that wines from this area, like the even more famous "Moscato di Siracusa" (since 2011 Siracusa), are the descendants of the legendary "Pollio di Siracusa", an ancient wine mentioned as Haluntium by the Roman author Pliny the Elder (23-79).

The Bianco is made from the variety Moscato Bianco(Muscat Blanc). There are also the wine types Spumante, Liquoroso and Passito. The Rosso is made from at least 65% Nero d'Avola. The red wine Nero d'Avola is produced from at least 85% of this variety. For both, a maximum of 35% and 15% of other authorised varieties can be used.
