Nutation

Latin term (meaning "swaying") for the automatic growth movement (nutating) of the plant without external stimulus. This is caused by uneven growth on different sides of a plant part. In vines, for example, this includes the opening of buds or the circular searching movement of tendrils. The top (tip) of the growing shoot is initially curved in a hook shape and then stands upright when growth is complete. See also under vegetation cycle and grapevine.
