O’Shea Maurice

The legendary Australian winemaker Maurice O'Shea (1897-1956) founded Mount Pleasant Winery in 1921 near Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley (New South Wales). He enlarged the property by buying the Old Paddock vineyard. In 1941, Mount Pleasant was acquired by Multi McWilliams. Maurice O'Shea, however, remained cellar master on "his winery" until his untimely death in 1956 and created some wines that rank among the best in Australia, including the famous white wine brands "Elizabeth" and "Lovedale" from the Sémillon variety. In his honour, McWilliams founded the "Maurice O'Shea Award" in 1990. It is awarded to individuals or a group who have made a significant contribution to the Australian wine industry. Previous winners include Max Schubert in 1990, Len Evans in 1991, David Wynn in 1993, Orlando in 1994, James Halliday in 1995 and Wolf Blass in 2000, as well as the "Len Evans Tutorial" institution in 2016.
