The red grape variety is an interspecific new breeding between Concord x Muscat d'Hamburg. It contains genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in Ohio in 1880 by the breeder George W. Campbell (1817-1898). It was named after the fairy king from Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
