This smallest continent of land mass with over 7,500 islands covers a land area of 1.3 million km² and extends over a marine area of 70 million km². However, the scope is defined differently. In the German-speaking world, only Polynesia (with Hawaii and New Zealand ), Melanesia and Micronesia. In the English-speaking world Australia and Oceania also referred to as Oceania. In addition, the term transoceania is also used, which covers an area from the north of Australia Indonesia to the southern border of the Philippines and the extreme west of the Pacific Islands.
