This professional title in viticulture was first recognized in France in 1965. According to the French institute OIV is an oenologist "a highly qualified specialist who, on the basis of her scientific and technical knowledge, is able to carry out tasks of fundamental importance in the field of viticulture and wine production in accordance with current customs and observing the relevant legal provisions".
