Description for a wine in the context of a wine talk or wine evaluation that conveys a smooth, viscous impression like oil in terms of appearance in the glass and flavour on the palate. This is characteristic of wines with a high content of alcohol, residual sugar and above all glycerine. This is characterised in the glass by so-called stained glass windows (in the "pointed arch style"). Related terms are fat, smooth and melting. However, the term oily is also used negatively in connection with the wine defect Lindton. See also under viscosity.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
