Ojaleshi

The red grape variety originates from Georgia or Turkey. The name means "on trees", which could refer to the traditional vine training used in the past. Synonyms are Chonouri, Odjaleshi, Odzhaleshi, Sconuri, Shonuri, Soinouri, Svanouri and Svanuri. It should not be confused with the Orbeluri Ojaleshi variety. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2006, there are genetic similarities with several Turkish varieties, which suggests a related origin. However, the parentage is unknown. According to an unverifiable hypothesis, it or an ancestor was already mentioned by the Greek historian Herodotus (482-425 BC). The very late-ripening vine produces spicy, peppery, ruby-coloured red wines with aromas of red berries and roses. It is cultivated in the north-eastern Samegrelo area on the Black Sea coast (where the PDO red wine Salkhino Ojaleshi is made from it) and in the Racha-Lechchumi region. It is also used as table grape. In 2016, 32 hectares of vineyards were designated in Georgia (Kym Anderson).
