The red grape variety originates from France. Synonyms are Auliven, Comican Nero, Cornichon Noir, Cornichon Violet, Corniola Nera, Dedo de Dame, Dedo de Preta, Dedo de Preto, Fosco Peloso, Galletta Nera, Malakoff Isium, Malakoff Isjum, Malakoff Izjum, Malakoff Usum, Oleagina, Olivella Nera Liparota, Olivella Vibonese, Olivette Crna, Olivette d'Avignon, Olivette de Vaucluse, Olivette Nera, Orsina Nera, Pacta, Panse Noire, Pergolese, Pergoleze, Pergolone, Pizzutello Nero, Provalone Nero, Purple Cornichon, Rizaga, Teta de Negra and Uva di Pergole. The parentage is unknown.
The vine must not be confused with the varieties Cornalin (Corniola), Poulsard (Olivette) or Sciascinoso (Olivella Nera) due to seemingly indicative synonyms or morphological similarities. Nothing is known about a possible genetic link to the white variety Olivette Blanche. It was a crossing partner of the new variety Nyora. The vine is used as wine grape and table grape. It is mainly cultivated in the French département of Vaucluse. In 2016, 16 hectares of vineyards were designated (statistics Kym Anderson).
