Abbreviation for "Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins". This state authority is responsible for monitoring the regulations governing viticulture and winemaking in France. It also represents all professional groups involved in wine production and wine marketing. It also analyses market developments and implements the promotion of the wine industry by the French government and the European Union. At the end of December 2005, ONIVINS and ONIFLHOR merged to form VINIFLHOR (Office National Interprofessionnel de Fruits, des Légumes, des Vins et de l'Horticulture). See also INAO and viticulture institutions.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
