Ontario (grape variety)

The white grape variety (also known as New York 95) is an interspecific new variety between Winchell x Moore's Diamond. Incidentally, the same parents also gave rise to the Ripley variety. It contains genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1908 at the Vine Breeding Institute of Cornell University in Geneva, New York. It was a crossing partner of the new varieties Alden, Edelweiss, Glenora, Himrod, Melody, New York Muscat, Reliance (1), Romulus, Ruby (2), Schuyler, Seneca (1), Steuben and Yates. This frost-hardy vine is well suited to cooler regions. It produces white wines with a pronounced foxy and is also used as table grape. The variety is cultivated in some north-eastern US states and in Canada. In 2016, however, only a tiny population of less than 0.1 hectares of vines was recorded in the Swiss canton of Zurich (Kym Anderson statistics).
