open tasting

Type of wine tasting where it is known exactly which wines are involved. These are served uncovered in the original bottles with visible labels. However, this form is not suitable for a competition or objective assessment of a wine. There is a danger that the tasters will be influenced (more positively than negatively) by their knowledge of the producer and the vintage. However, a useful purpose could be training, for example. This contrasts with blind tasting. See also under wine evaluation and wine address.
