In the mythology of Ancient Egypt, god of the afterlife, rebirth, the Nile and later also fertility. At first, Osiris (meaning "seat of the eye") played a subordinate role in the royal cult, as he was considered the god of the deceased, but not the god of the king. It was not until the beginning of the Middle Kingdom that Osiris was given complete power over the realm of the dead and since then he has been above the king in the hierarchy and became one of the most important gods in Egypt. The constellation of Orion is associated with him. He was also considered the "lord of winemaking" or "lord of wine in abundance". As the god of fertility, he taught the Egyptians how to grow grapes and make beer. The new variety Osiris was named after him.
