Overberg

Wine growing area (district) in the southeast on the coast South Africa that to the region Cape South Coast belongs. It is located north adjacent to the climatically similar district Walker Bay, The name means "behind the mountain", which refers to the eastern mountain range of the Hottentots-Holland mountains. There are the wards Elgin, Greyton, Klein River and Theewater. Overberg used to be known as a growing area for apples. Viticulture is only operated here since the mid-1970s and has since taken a big boost. The vineyards cover nearly 1,000 hectares of vineyards. The climate is rather cool and temperate due to the proximity to the sea, partly artificial irrigation respectively. It is mainly the varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz cultivated. Many wineries from the northwest adjoining districts Stellenbosch and Paarl such as Nederburg obtain grapes from here. Well-known producers are Beaumont, Newton-Johnson, Paul Cluver Estate, Raka and Whale Haven.
