Overberg

Wine growing area (District) in the southeast on the coast South Africa going to the region Cape South Coast heard. It lies north of the climatically similar district Walker Bay, The name means "behind the mountain", which refers to the mountain range to the east of the Hottentots-Holland mountains. There are the Wards Elgin, Greyton, Klein River and Theewater. Overberg was previously known as a growing area for apples. Viticulture has only been practiced here since the mid-1970s and has since boomed. The vineyards cover almost 1,000 hectares of vineyards. The climate is rather cool and temperate due to the proximity to the sea, some must be artificial irrigation respectively. The main varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Many wineries from the neighboring districts to the northwest Stellenbosch and Paarl such as Nederburg get grapes from here. Well-known producers are Beaumont, Newton-Johnson, Paul Cluver Estate, Raka and Whale Haven.
