Padthaway

Australian wine growing area (GI) named after the town of the same name (suburb of Keppoch) in the Limestone Coast zone in the state of South Australia. The name is derived from the Aboriginal term for "good water". Padthaway is located north of the more famous Coonawarra area and is sometimes referred to as its twin because of the similar soil type of Terra Rossa over limestone. The climate is sunny and dry with few rainy days, which requires artificial irrigation. Seppelt was the first company to plant vineyards here in 1963. Today, the vineyards cover about 2,800 hectares. The most important red wine varieties are Shiraz(Syrah), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The most important white wine varieties are Chardonnay, Sémillon and Riesling. First and foremost Padthaway is a supplier of grapes to major producers in other regions. Well known producers are Accolade Wines, Lindeman's, Padthaway Estate, Seppelt and Wynns.
