The winery "Pago de los Capellanes SA" is located near the municipality of Pedrosa de Duero in the heart of the DO Ribera del Duero
in the northern Spanish region Castile and Leon
, The property received its name centuries ago when it was still owned by the Roman Catholic Church and was frequently visited by the chaplains of the Pedrosa community. The finca has been owned by the Rodero Villa family since 1980. The vineyards at 800 meters above sea level cover around 100 hectares of vineyards and are mainly planted with the varieties Tinto Fino (variety of Tempranillo), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The yield is limited to a maximum of 5,000 kg / ha, which is far below the official DO requirements. The Bordeaux-style wines are rather untypical for the region.
The flagship of the house is the "Picón Capellanes" made from 100% pure Tinto Fino from a two hectare plot. Malolactic fermentation takes place in large French oak barrels. The wine then matures in 100% new French barriques for another 26 months. Other premium wines are the "Tinto Reserva" (18 months) and "Crianza" (12 months) blended from 90% Tinto Fino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. One designed for quick enjoyment Joven
(Young wine) is blended from 80% Tinto Fino 80%, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot and aged in barriques for five months. The "Tinto Reserva 2003" was awarded in 2006 Tempranillos al Mundo
in Cologne as the overall winner with the highest price "Gran Oro".
