The Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu پاکستان) in South Asia with the capital Islamabad covers 796,095 km². It borders Iran to the south-west, Afghanistan to the west, China to the north and India to the east. In the south, Pakistan shares the coast of the Arabian Sea, a tributary of the Indian Ocean. The state was created in 1947 from the predominantly Muslim parts of British India, while the areas with a Hindu or other majority population and most of the predominantly Muslim Kashmir (there is a conflict over parts of it) were absorbed into present-day India. The former part of East Pakistan has been independent as Bangladesh since the Bangladesh War of 1971.
There is practically no viticulture in this Islamic state due to the ban on alcohol. In 2021, the vineyards covered 17,372 hectares, of which almost exclusively sultanas and table grapes were produced. There are still many wild vines in the high mountain valleys along the Silk Road, from which small quantities of wine are produced.

In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
