The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Agostana Nera, Marzemina Nera di Feltre, Nera Gentile di Fonzano, Nostrana Nera, Pavana Nera, Peloseta Nera, Pelosetta, Ussulara, Vesentina, Vicentina and Visentina. The parentage is unknown. It may often be confused with the Marzemino variety due to morphological similarities. It is not a dark variant of Pavana Bianca. The variety was first mentioned in 1825 by the naturalist Guiseppe Acerbi (1773-1846). The medium-late ripening vine is resistant to powdery mildew. It was very widespread in the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto in the 19th century. It is mainly cultivated in the Veneto province of Belluno. In 2016, 20 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
