Winegrowing sector (GI) in the state of Western Australia. It is part of the South West Australia zone and lies between the northwest and the southeast . The area is popularly known as the "Karri Country" because of its magnificent karri forests (eucalyptus species), which cover 85% of the area. Viniculture has been practiced here only since 1977, it is a young, up-and-coming area. The vineyards cover 500 hectares. Most are located between the Donnelly River to the north and the Warren River running through the middle of the area. It has a warm maritime climate with rainfall mostly only in winter, making artificial necessary in summer. The deep red karri clay is actually too fertile for vines, so that the winegrowers artificially stress the vines by e.g. intensive thinning out. The most important red wine varieties are Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz, the most important white wine varieties Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Verdelho. Well-known producers are Chestnut Grove, Picardy, Salitage and Smithbrook.
