The red grape variety is a new variety between Teinturier du Cher x Aleatico. More synonymous are Pervomaiskii, Pervomajsky and Pervomajskij. The name means "First of May" or "May Day". The cross was made in 1935 in Uzbekistan by the breeders A. N. Negrul and M. C. Zhuravel. Plant variety protection was granted in 1953. The late-maturing vine is susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery and downy mildew. It yields dark-coloured, full-bodied red wines and is also used as table grape. In 2010, 64 hectares were still reported in Moldova: but none in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics). Small populations are also said to exist in Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
