Pettenthal

single vineyard (also Pettental) in the municipality of Nierstein in the German wine-growing region of Rheinhessen. It is part of the so-called "Red Slope" within the Rhine front. The name was mentioned as a cadastral name as early as 1753. According to the most common version, it goes back to "Pater's Tal" (valley of the Pater's = valley of the monks). In addition, the first name "Peter" as well as the toad migrations (Petten = local name for toads), which are frequent here, are mentioned as the origin. The vineyards, which face east to southeast and, in a small side valley, also south, are 50 to 170 metres above sea level with a slope of 2 to 70% and cover 31 hectares. The soils consist of fine-grained red clay slate (Rotliegendes) with alluvial soil and clay loam in the shallow parts. The two vineyards of Floß and Ober-Rehbach in the upper part of the site belong to the best part. Here, the Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc varieties are cultivated, among others. The Domhof Baumann, Domtalhof, Gehring Theo, Gröhl, Gunderloch, Heyl zu Herrnsheim, Huff Fritz Ekkehard, Keller Klaus, Kühling-Gillot, Louis Guntrum, Raddeck Stefan, Rappenhof, Rheinterrassenhof, Schätzel Kai, Schneider Georg Albrecht, Staatliche Weinbaudomäne Oppenheim, St. Antony and Strub Walter, for example, all have shares in the site.
