Pfaffmann Karl

The winery is located in the municipality of Walsheim in the German wine-growing region of Pfalz. The estate, which was initially run by Karl Pfaffmann as a mixed agricultural business, was completely converted to viticulture in 1964. Today, the winery is run by Helmut Pfaffmann, and his son Markus has been responsible for the cellar since 1998 after studying viticulture and cellar management in Geisenheim. The vineyards cover 40 hectares of vineyards in the single vineyards Bischofskreuz and Herrenberg (Nußdorf), Hohenrain (Knöringen), and Silberberg (Walsheim). Two thirds of the vineyards are planted with the white wine varieties Riesling, Pinot Gris, Kerner, Chardonnay, Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Scheurebe, Huxelrebe and Ortega, and one third with the red wine varieties Dornfelder, Pinot Noir, Portugieser, Dunkelfelder, Merlot and St. Laurent. The aim is to achieve high grape quality through appropriate yield-reducing measures with appropriate pruning, foliage work and green pruning. The entire harvest is fermented in steel tanks under temperature control. The wine is also matured in tanks and partly in barriques. The wines are mostly vinified dry. In suitable years, noble sweet Prädikat wines and ice wine are also produced. Furthermore, bottle-fermented sparkling wines are also produced.
