Pfortenser Köppelberg

single vineyard in Schulpforte (Schulpforta), a district of the Naumburg suburb of Bad Kösen (Neuenburg Castle area) in the German wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut. The vineyard was planted by the monks after the founding of the Cistercian monastery St. Mariae ad Portam (St. Mary at the Gate) and was first mentioned in 1154. The vineyard lay fallow for a long time and was replanted between 1971 and 1972. The vineyard, which faces mainly south to west and partly north to east, has a slope of 10 to 35% and comprises 13 hectares of vines. The weathered shell limestone soil is interspersed with gravel, and in the lower areas with deep loess loam and alluvial alluvium. It is a very heterogeneous and wind-open site. The varieties cultivated here are mainly Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Silvaner, Pinot Gris and Blauer Portugieser. The Kloster Pforta and Lützkendorf wineries, for example, have shares in the site.
