The appellation is located in the northeast of the French wine-growing region Languedoc, It was classified as AOC in 1985 and belongs to the highest quality category "Crus du Languedoc". The vineyards cover 1,000 hectares of vineyards on diverse soils of limestone, conglomerates, dolomite, rubble and marl at the eponymous Pic Saint Loup (658 m). They extend over 12 municipalities in the department Hérault and a municipality in the department Gard, Red wine and rosé are made from at least 2 of the 3 main grape varieties Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ), Mourvèdre ( Monastrell ) and Syrah, as well as Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) Cinsault. Counoise and Morrastel ( Graciano ) blended. Well-known producers are Château de Cazeneuve, Château du Lancyre, Château de Lascaux, Domaine Ermitage du Pic Saint-Loup, Domaine Haut-Lirou, Domaine de l'Hortus, Domaine de Mirabel, Domaine de Mortiès, Domaine de la Salade Saint-Henri, Domaine de Villeneuve and Mas Bruguère.
