The winery "Bodegas Pinord" is located in the municipality of Vilafranca del Penedès in the Spanish DO area of
Penedès (Catalonia region). It was founded in 1942 by Don José María Tetas. The name was derived from a "Pi del Nord" (pine of the north), which at that time stood four kilometres away from the headquarters. Already in 1946 a "Vino de Aguja" was produced. Pinord was thus one of the first producers of sparkling wine in Spain. Today, three generations of the family work in the company. The vineyards cover an area of 100 hectares with the vineyards Montanyans, El Serral and Coll de Bou.
The local varieties Xarel-Lo, Macabeo, Parellada, Tempranillo and Garnacha Tinta are cultivated here, as well as international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer and Merlot. There are 2,000 barrique barrels available for the ageing process. The DO wines are called "Clos 15", "Clos de Torribas" and "Chateldon". The red wine "Pi del Nord" is made of Cabernet Sauvignon and matures for 24 months in French oak.
Cava (sparkling wine) is also produced on a larger scale. Other products are sweet wines, dessert wines,
sangria,
brandy,
cooking wine (flavoured), herbal liqueurs, wine vinegar (Cabernet Sauvignon) and olive oil.
Another winery is located near the municipality of Bellmunt del Priorat in the
Priorato DOCa area (Catalonia). On the vineyard "Mas Blanc" the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cariñena (Carignan), Garnacha Tinta, Merlot and Syrah are cultivated. The cultivation is carried out according to the rules of
organic viticulture, with a complete absence of
pesticides. The DOCa red wines "Balcons" and "+7" are produced.
