Pinot Nova

The red grape variety (Breeding No. 1924-29) is a new breeding between the red variety Pinot Noir x the white variety Malverina. It contains genes from Vitis berlandieri, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The hybrid was crossed in 1990 by Ferdinand Regner at the Klosterneuburger Weinbauinstitut (Austria). The medium-maturing, frost-resistant vine is resistant to various fungal diseases such as powdery mildew, downy mildew, botrytis, red burner, black spot disease and black rot. It is therefore considered a PIWI variety. It produces colourful red wines similar to the St. Laurent variety (also a Pinot descendant). In 2016, however, no stocks were reported (Kym Anderson).
