Pipe

General term (German: Pfeife, also Pipa) for a wine cask with tapered ends, which exists in many countries with different volumes. In the Anglo-American world, pipe is a hollow measure or also a type of barrel with a volume of 477.339 litres in England and 476.962 litres in the USA. In Portugal, there are various sizes. For the storage and ageing of port wine in the Douro Valley, the traditional measure is 550 (picture), but there are also types between 580 and 630 litres. For transporting port wine, types with 534.24 litres are used, which are divided into 21 almudes of 25.44 litres. There are also special types for Madeira (Portugal) with 418, for Marsala (Italy) with 423 and for Cognac (France) with 600 litres. See also lists of relevant keywords under barrel and barrel types.
