Plato Fritz

The German chemist Fritz Plato (1858-1938) was director of the German Institute for Weights and Measures. In 1900 he published a table based on the Bohemian chemist Karl Joseph N. Balling, with which he further developed the Balling system. However, a "Balling" and a "Plato" are almost equivalent. Plato" was used to represent the original wort concentration in beer. In English-speaking countries, on the other hand, balling is also used to determine the must weight in wine. See also areometer and a list under units of measurement.
