The winery is located in the municipality of Wolkersdorf, 15 kilometres north of Wien in the south of the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Weinviertel. The traditional family has been cultivating wine here for 300 years. One ancestor is the composer Ignaz Joseph Pleyel (1757-1831), after whom a red and white wine cuvée series is named. DI Josef Pleil was president of the Austrian Winegrowers' Association from 1990 to 2013. He was one of the initiators of the new origin-controlled quality level DAC (Weinviertel DAC) introduced in Austria in 2003. The winery is run by son Ing. Christian Pleil after his education at the Klosterneuburg School of Vit iculture and internships in renowned wineries in Germany, California, South Africa and Australia.

The vineyards cover 18 hectares of vines. The white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner (main variety with over 45%), Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Donauriesling account for 75% of the vineyards, and the red wine varieties Zweigelt and Merlot for 25%. The vineyards are cultivated in accordance with the rules of KIP (Controlled Integrated Production). The entire production process, from the grape harvest to the ageing of the wines and bottling, is carried out according to the certified criteria of Sustainable Austria.

The white wines are matured in stainless steel tanks with cooled fermentation to preserve the fruitiness and varietal character. The red wines are matured with biological acid reduction (malolactic fermentation) in large wooden barrels and partly also in barriques. The premium wines are various Weinviertel DAC (Grüner Veltliner), Chardonnay Wienerfeld and Zweigelt Kirchbergen. In years with suitable weather conditions, high-grade Prädikat wines are also pressed. Around 100,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. The winery is a member of the Premium Wine Estates Weinviertel.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
