Plyto

The white grape variety originates from Greece, specifically from the island of Crete. Synonyms are Plito, Ploto, Pluto and Plytó. The medium-maturing vine is susceptible to downy mildew and botrytis, and moderately to powdery mildew. It produces fresh white wines of moderate alcohol content with aromas of citrus, pears and grass. The variety is grown in mixed vineyards in the east of the island of Crete. The variety, which is threatened with extinction, was reactivated by the Lyrarakis brothers on 1.5 hectares. In the meantime, it is cultivated again by several producers on about seven hectares (2011).
