Poetry

Wine has inspired many poets and poets in their work. Among the most famous examples are Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) and, according to Goethe, the Persian poet Mohammed Schams ed-Din (1324-1390), better known as Hafis. One of the oldest examples is the Greek Archilochos of Palos (700-645 B.C.), who wrote about the effect of wine as a comforter during a long sea voyage: "The cups reach through the rowing benches, open all the jugs for the drinkers, how could we be sober with so much wine, all night long?" Probably the most famous saying about wine was written by the Greek poet Alcaeus (600 BC) with "In vino veritas". See over a hundred other sayings under quotations.
