The estate is located in the municipality of Marling (Marlengo) at 352 meters above sea level above Merano in the Italian viticulture sector South-Tirol
(Region Trentino-Alto Adige
). The first documentary mention as "Poppenhof zu Merningen" dates from 1285; the name probably goes back to a previous owner "de Poppe". The family name "Menz" has been used since the beginning of the 18th century. The wine production on the farm from 1592 is named with a Torggel
busy. The house book from 1722 provides information about wine sales in barrels; The wine has also been sold in bottles for around 100 years. The bottle label that was created back then and is still used today is a symbol of this tradition. Today the winery is managed by Andreas (cellar master) and Elisabeth Menz.
The vineyards cover 4.5 hectares of vineyards. They are planted with the white varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and Goldmuskateller, as well as with the red varieties Lagrein, Vernatsch and Merlot. The wines are made with origin and Rebsortentypizität vinified. After controlled fermentation in steel tanks, the red wines mature in small and medium-sized wooden barrels. The product range includes several South Tyrol (Alto Adige) DOC wines. The winery is a member of the associations Free wine growers in South Tyrol
