Portele Karl

The Austrian viticulture expert Karl Portele (1856-1922) studied chemistry at the Technical University in Vienna, became an assistant there and in 1877 came to the Institute in South Tyrol. As an adjunct, he produced numerous drawings for the Handbuch des Weinbaus und der Kellerwirtschaft (Handbook of Viticulture and Wine Cellar Management) written by August-Wilhelm Freiherr von (1827-1894) and Edmund (1846-1901). From 1899 to 1902, he was director of the institute and was awarded the title of Hofrat and then ennobled in 1912. From 1902 to 1916 he was a viticulture advisor in the Ministry of Agriculture in Wie. He was significantly involved in the 1907 viticulture law. He made a special contribution to the introduction of the in the fight against downy . Portele published numerous study results on the development of the grape berry and the sex ratio of the vine blossom. He died impoverished in in Lower Austria, where a commemorative plaque was placed at his death house.
