The white grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Aspropotamisa, Aspropotamisio, Aspropotamissa, Aspropotamissi, Aspropotamissio, Potamisi, Potamisiès, Potamisio, Potamisio Lefko, Potamissies and Potamissio Lefko. Nothing is known about the ancestry (parentage) or a possible genetic relationship to the red variety Potamissi Mavro. DNA analyses have not confirmed a suspected relationship to the Early Muscat variety. The medium-maturing, high-yielding vine is susceptible to coulure. It produces rather simple white wines rich in alcohol and acidity. These are used exclusively as blends. The variety is cultivated in the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea, especially on the island of Santorini, as well as on the Ionian island of Kythera. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
