Prugnolo Gentile

The red grape variety (also Sangiovese Grosso) is a clone or a variety of Sangiovese. It was probably selected at the beginning of the 18th century in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany, where it is found exclusively today. The vine is said to be very different from other Sangiovese varieties in that it is rich in tannins. However, the long held view of a better quality is no longer considered correct today, because DNA-wise it does not differ at all. Strictly speaking, Prugnolo Gentile is only one of the countless synonyms. The name Prugnolo Gentile is mentioned in the DOC/DOCG regulations for Rosso di Montepulciano, Vino Nobile di Monte pulciano, and Vin Santo di Monte pulciano, among others. No stocks were reported under this name in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
