Puncheon

Name (also Punchion or Pencheon) for an Anglo-American measure or barrel type, also called Firkin (barrel) or Tertian. The designation is derived from the inspection of the barrels, which was confirmed by a punch in the barrel wall. Depending on the use(beer, wine, liquor, others) the volumes were quite different and also changed over time. Since 1824, the volume in England has been 318,226 litres (84 US gallons) and in the USA 317,975 litres (84 US gallons). One puncheon corresponds to one third tun (ton) and consists of two tierces.
