PVDC

Abbreviation for polyvinylidene chloride, a carbon-based plastic. PVDC has long been used in the packaging industry for numerous foods and pharmaceuticals to protect them from spoilage. Positive properties include food safety and low oxygen permeability. It is considered the best closure material with absolute tightness and chemical inertness (inability to react). In the wine industry, PVDC films are also used for capsules (cover over natural corks), as well as for alternative wine bottle closures such as screw caps and crown caps. Other plastics include GRP, PET, polyethylene (PE) and PVC.
