Measuring device (grch. Pykno = densely crowded) for the determination of the Relative density of solids or liquids by weighing. The first device of this kind is attributed to the Arab universal scholar Abu Raihan Muhammad al-Biruni (973-1048). It consists of a glass bulb with a thinly pierced glass stopper and must be calibrated to a certain volume. If you fill it up successively with the liquid to be examined and with water and weigh both, the density can be determined. Using a pycnometer, among other things Mostgewicht and alcohol content be determined. See also under refractometer as well as regarding other methods or measuring devices under analytical testing,
