Pyrenees-Orientales

Department at the southernmost tip France with the capital Perpignan in the Occitania region, which was named after its location on the eastern edge of the Pyrenees. It borders the Mediterranean in the east and the south in the south Spain, in the north to the department Aude and in the west to Andorra and the Ariège department. The winegrowing areas belong to the winegrowing double region Languedoc-Roussillon, The AOC area covering the entire department is Cotes du Roussillon (see the other AOC areas under Roussillon ).

The country wine or IGP area is called Pyrénées-Orientales. Other independent IGP areas are Cotes Catalanes and Côte Vermeille. The department is also part of the large regional IGP area Pays d'Oc, The main red wine varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) Cinsault, Mourvèdre ( Monastrell ), Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ) Merlot and Syrah, The main types of white wine are Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc, Role ( Vermentino ) and Viognier, Well-known producers are Domaine Cazes, Domaine de l'Horizon, Domaine du Mas Chichet and Vignerons Catalans.
