Département at the southernmost tip France with the capital Perpignan in the region of Occitania, which was named after its location on the eastern edge of the Pyrenees. It is bordered to the east by the Mediterranean, to the south Spain, in the north to the department Aude and to the west to Andorra and the Ariège department. The winegrowing areas belong to the viticulture double region Languedoc-Roussillon, The whole department is the AOC area Côtes du Roussillon (For the other AOC areas, see Roussillon ).

The country wine or the entire département comprehensive IGP area is called Pyrénées-Orientales. Other standalone IGP areas are Côtes Catalanes and Côte Vermeille. The department is also part of the large regional IGP area Pays d'Oc, The most important red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan Noir ( mazuelo ) Cinsault, Mourvèdre ( Monastrell ), Grenache Noir ( Garnacha Tinta ) Merlot and Syrah, The most important white wines are Chardonnay. Sauvignon Blanc, Role ( Vermentino ) and Viognier, Well-known producers are Domaine Cazes, Domaine de l'Horizon Domaine du Mas Chichet and Vignerons Catalans.
