Rabelo

Portuguese name for a special type of long boat used to transport the basic wines for port wine from the Douro Valley to the Porto suburb of Vila Nova de Gaia. Most of the time, these boats drifted downstream only with the river current, sailing was rather rare. Upstream, the boats were usually towed. Today, they are almost irrelevant and serve mainly tourist purposes. They are moored in front of the lodges (warehouses) of the port wineries or take part in historical regattas.
