The white grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Asprinia, Asprinia di Aversa, Asprinio, Asprinio Bianco, Asprino, Asprino Bianco, Olivese, Ragusano Bianco and Uva Asprina. The ancestry (parentage) is unknown. It must not be confused with the varieties Greco (Asprinio Bianco), Malvasia di Lipari (Ragusano Bianco) or Moscatello Selvatico (Ragusano) because of synonyms that seem to indicate it. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2010, it is a parent of the varieties Marchione and Mostosa (ex VIVC catalogue). According to the Swiss biologist Dr. José Vouillamoz, however, it is unclear whether there is actually an independent grape variety called Ragusano (personal information). In any case, no stocks were reported under the name Ragusano in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
