Ranna Melnishka Loza

The red grape variety is a new cross between Shiroka Melnishka x Valdiguié. The breeding list indicated a seed mixture of the varieties Durif, Jurançon and Valdiguié, but DNA analyses carried out in 2005 established the definite paternity of Valdiguié. Synonyms are Early Melnik, Melnik 55, Melnishka Ranna and Ranna Melnishka. The cross was made in 1963 in Bulgaria by Yane Atanasov. It is often confused with the parent variety. Incidentally, the same parents also produced the new variety Melnik 82. The medium-ripening vine is susceptible to both types of mildew, but resistant to botrytis. It produces spicy red wines with sour cherry aroma and ageing potential. The variety is cultivated in the southwest. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
