Ravat Jean François

Jean François Ravat (+1940), a trained French mining engineer, began to cultivate new vines near the Burgundian town of Marcigny in 1929. Until 1935, he created numerous second generation French hybrids by crossing European and American vines. He mostly used Seibel hybrids as crossing partners. His breeding goal was to produce wines similar to burgundy by preferentially using the varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. His most famous crossbreeding products are the varieties Ravat 34, Ravat Blanc (Ravat 6), Ravat Noir (Ravat 262), Tissier Ravat (Ravat 578) and Vignoles (Ravat 51).
