Rebo

The red grape variety is a new cross between Merlot x Teroldego according to a DNA analysis carried out in 2013. The paternity of Marzemino given in the breeding list turned out to be wrong. Synonyms or breeding numbers are I.R. 107-3, Rigotti 107-3 and Incrocio Rigotti 107-3. Incidentally, the Sennen variety was also created with the same parents. The cross was made in 1948 by the botanist Rebo Rigotti at the viticultural institute San Michele all'Adige (Trentino-South Tyrol). The medium to late ripening vine is generally resistant to fungal diseases. It produces full-bodied red wines that are well suited for barrique ageing. It is mainly cultivated in the Trentino region, where it is permitted in the DOC area Trentino. In Italy, 85 hectares are planted with it. There are further stocks in Brazil (1 ha), Romania (5 ha) and Switzerland (0.2 ha). In 2016, a total of 92 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson statistics).
