Red Globe

The grape variety is a new variety between Olmo L 12-80 x ((Hunisa x Emperor) x Nocera). Synonyms are 10-23D, Globo Rojo, Hong Ti Qui and Rose LTO. The cross was made in 1957 at the University of California by the breeder Harold P. Olmo (1909-2006). The red-berried variety is mainly used as table grape. It was introduced to the market in 1981 in its country of origin, California. There it has displaced the Emperor variety and occupies over 5,000 hectares of vineyards as table grape. It is also cultivated as table grape in Argentina, Chile (6,000 ha), Italy (6,000 ha) and South Africa. As wine grape it is cultivated in Ethiopia (2 ha) and Peru (240 ha). In 2016, 242 hectares of vineyard area were designated (Kym Anderson).
