Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso

The red grape variety originates from the border region Italy (Gorizia)-Slovenia (Goricia) and belongs to the large Refosco name group. Synonyms are Malvoise, Peteljcice, Refosco, Refosco dal Pecòl Rosso, Refosco Peduncolo Rosso, Refoschin, Refosco delli Ucelli, Refosco Nostrano, Refosco Peduncolo Rosso, Refošk, Rifòsc, Rifòsc dal Pecòl Ròss, Rifosco, Teran Crvene and Teran Crvene Peteljcice. The name Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, derived from the red-coloured stems, first appeared around 1870, when Refosco varieties began to be distinguished. Despite seemingly suggestive synonyms or morphological similarities, it should not be confused with the Bonarda Piemontese, Mondeuse Noire, Refosco di Faedis or Terrano varieties. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2006, it is a direct descendant of Marzemino; the second parent is unknown. A direct descendant is the variety Corvina Veronese.

Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso - Weintraube und Blätter

The late-maturing variety is susceptible to downy mildew and black spot disease, but resistant to botrytis and esca. It produces dark-coloured, acidic and tannic red wines with aromas of plums and almonds. The variety is widespread in the regions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Veneto, where it is permitted in many DOC wines. These include Colli Orientali del Friuli, Friuli Aquileia, Friuli Grave, Friuli Isonzo, Friuli Latisana, Lison-Pramaggiore and Riviera del Brenta. In Italy, it is cultivated on 1,267 hectares with an increasing trend. There are also small populations across the border in Slovenia and in Greece (5 ha). However, the variety grown in California under Refosco is the Mondeuse Noire variety. In 2016, a total of 1,272 hectares of vineyards were designated (Kym Anderson).
