The winery is located in the municipality of Zöbing in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Kamptal at the foot of the Zöbinger Heiligenstein. It has been family-owned since the 1950s and is run by Erwin and Paul Retzl. The mostly terraced vineyards cover almost 20 hectares of vineyards in and around Zöbing. The most important sites include Heiligenstein, Kogelberg, Pfaffenberg and Lamm. 80% of the vineyards are planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Sauvignon Bl anc, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Welschriesling, Traminer and Müller-Thurgau, and 20% with the red wine variety Zweigelt.
The cellar is laid out on three levels, which is why pumping processes are avoided. After the juice has been extracted, the grapes are left to macerate for a period of time that is individually adapted to the grape material and then pressed with the utmost care. The wines mature exclusively in stainless steel tanks in the 400-year-old brick vaults of the wine cellar. The premium wines include various Rieslings and Grüner Veltliner with vineyard designations. Wines dating back to 1903 are stored in the cellar and are only opened on special occasions.
For me, Lexicon from wein.plus is the most comprehensive and best source of information about wine currently available.
