Ribera del Guadiana

DO area (banks of the Guadiana) in the Spanish region Extremadura right on the border too Portugal, It was named after the Guadiana River, which flows through the wine-growing region in a westerly direction. The area extends largely in the southern half, the Extremadura Baja. The area covering around 22,000 hectares of vines was formed in 1999 from six former rural wine areas (VT). These are Cañamero in the northeast (5 municipalities), Matanegra in the south (8), Montánchez in the center (27), Ribera Alta in the central east (38), Ribera Baja in the central west (11) and Tierra de Barros in the southeast (36 ).

Despite the large extension over 100 kilometers, there is a homogeneous climate with hot, dry summers and moderate winters. There are some very different ones soil types, Barren slate soils predominate in Cañamero and Montánchez, sandy soils in Ribera Alta and Schwanmmland soils in Matanegra, Ribera Alta and Ribera Baja. The largest and best known area Tierra de Barros (land of clay) has been approved as a temporary DO since 1979. It has fertile, nutrient-rich clay soils at around 500 meters above sea level. Due to east winds, the climate here is extremely hot and dry.

With the establishment of the DO, a great improvement in quality was achieved, especially for red wines. The main red wine varieties are Bobal. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cigüente ( Síria ), Eva ( Beba ) Garnacha Tinta. Garnacha Tintorera. Graciano, Jáen Tinto ( Mencia ), Mazuela or Cariñena ( mazuelo ) Monastrell. Merlot. Pinot Noir.
