The DO area, named after the river of the same name, is located in the east of the Spanish region La Mancha
, It was only classified in 2003. The vineyards cover 9,200 hectares in seven municipalities in the province of Cuenca on both sides of the Júcar at 650 to 750 meters above sea level. There is a continental, dry climate with extremely hot summers and very cold winters. The soil consists of loose, gravelly debris on the surface and clayey soil in the subsoil with good water storage capacity. The range only applies to red wines made from the approved varieties Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cencibel (Tempranillo).
